GX85 Camera Cage

William Rice

Summer 2024

This is one of the first things which I designed after getting my hands on a Bambu Labs A1 mini. Coming from my old printer the Anet A8, the capabilities of the A1 mini were far above what I could previously imagine. Just the fact that I didn’t need to spend 30 minutes leveling the bed was enough for me to actually want to use the printer.

SmallRig used to make a camera cage for the Lumix GX85 m43 camera however it has since been discontinued so I have not been able to get my hands on one. I figured a good exercise in design would be to replicate the design but using plastic. Obviously the cage would not be for protection and as the plastic is weak the screws mounts everywhere would likely be too this was mostly just for the aesthetics and practice.

I designed the model using Shapr3D on my iPad Air. Shapr3D is a really interesting modeling software as it feels super intuitive however it lacks many of the advanced features required for more complex models. Regardless, after spending a few hours measuring comparing and modeling, plus a few small tests segments, I had a version which looked good and I sent it over to the printer. After an hour and some change I had a fully working camera cage for my camera!
